Made with Moo Free: Zesty Orange Madeira Cake + Topping

A new entry for our Made with Moo Free campaign has been submitted. This time we have a recipe for orange madeira cake from Emma, we’ll send some Moo Free chocolates to her as soon as possible to thank her.


  • 175g/6oz of dairy free Butter
  • 175g/6oz caster sugar
  • 3 medium eggs beaten (or replace with flax seed and water - 1 tablespoon of flax seeds and 3 tablespoons of water to replace each egg)
  • 250g/9oz self-raising flour
  • 2-3 tbsp almond milk
  • Zest of one orange
  1. Grease an 18cm / 7inch round tin, line the bottom with grease-proof paper and the sides of the tin.
  2. Pre heat the oven to 180’ or gas mark 4.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl until fluffy, add the egg / flax mixture a little at a time alternating with adding the flour.
  4. Add in the milk and beat the mixture.
  5. Add the zest of one orange.
  6. Add the mixture to the tin and bake for 30-40 min. until springy to the touch and a skewer comes out of the cake dry. Allow to cool before removing from tin.

This small recipe for a topping was also included, feel free to use it for the above recipe - we have been advised it works great for cupcakes as well.


  1. Beat together the sugar and butter and add the melted chocolate
  2. Spread the mixture over the cake, put in the fridge to set.
